The registered association Oulujärvi LEADER was founded in the beginning of the LEADER II period in 1996. Local residents either individually or together, as well as associations, enterprises, municipalities and village associations can apply for membership. At the moment, the association has over two hundred members.
The first development plan of Oulujärvi district was based on local village development plans. Between 1997 and 1999 there were 92 projects, development projects and investment projects financed through Oulujärvi LEADER. The total costs of the projects was approximately 2,2 million euros. At the time, the region consisted of Paltamo, Vaala, Vuolijoki and partly Kajaani.
The new LEADER+ programme implemented at the time began in May 2001. A relatively long application process preceded the implementation. The first funding decisions for applicants were made in the autumn 2001. The operating field of LAG Oulujärvi LEADER has expanded since the beginning and nowadays includes Puolanka and the entire Kajaani.
LEADER+ programme is implemented during the period 2001-2006. The public funding available for projects is ca. 3 million euros. Local residents either individually or together, associations, enterprises and public corporations are eligible to apply for financing through LEADER.
Oulujärvi LEADER is preparing development programme also for the period of 2007-2013. This development programme will be drawn up in cooperation with the local residents and organisations.
